Transmission Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

What is a flush?   Is it good or bad?

A transmission flush, in our opinion, is a way to take consumer’s money.  The intentions are good, but the service may be unhealthy to the life of your transmission.

All transmissions have cooler lines that feed into either the radiator or an auxiliary cooler and some vehicles have both.  The transmission fluid flows into these systems to be cooled and then returns to the transmission via the cooler lines.

A flush is simply unfastening a cooler line and hooking up a machine that pushes new fluid in and the old fluid out through the entire system.

Most transmissions have a pan and filter just like the engine does.  If a flush is performed, the pan is not removed and the filter is not changed.  Therefore, the pan condition of the transmission is not known during a flush.  Debris may be stirred up from the bottom of the pan and cause problems that may or may not have occurred otherwise.  Also, excessive debris can be forced into the filter and potentially plug the filter.

Guaranteed Transmission Service has researched and found the best way to maintain your transmission.  We offer a complete fluid exchange with a traditional transmission service.  This service includes removing the pan enabling

us to see the overall condition of the transmission and any wear.  Our machine is inserted where the filter goes and simulates normal operation of the transmission while cycling new fluid in and old fluid out.  By doing this, we can see the condition of the pan, clean the debris out of the pan, and replace the filter and all the fluid.
Please note some transmissions do not have a pan.  Therefore, in order to change the filter the transmission must be removed and disassembled.  In these situations we recommend a simple drain and fill.  We are happy to answer any questions about the maintenance services we provide and what is recommended for your vehicle.  You can speak with our service advisor by calling (765) 447-6012.

When should I service my transmission?

There are many variables that determine when you should service your transmission.  Manufacturers, in some instances, are now stating that the transmission fluid does not need to be changed for 100,000 miles or the lifetime of the vehicle.  However, the catch has always been that it is only applicable under “normal driving conditions”.

What are “normal driving conditions”?  Well it’s easier to tell you what is not considered “normal driving conditions”.  For example, exotic climates such as either excessively hot or cold weather conditions, winter elements, or rugged terrain are not “normal driving conditions”.  Other examples not considered to be “normal driving conditions” include: excessive stop and go traffic conditions, commercial uses, towing, and pushing snow.

Here is some food for thought, how often do you change your motor oil?  Why should your transmission fluid be any different as far as being maintained on a regular basis?  The biggest contributor of fluid breaking down is heat.  According to the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA) 90% of all transmission failures are due to overheating.  ATRA recommends servicing your transmission every 30,000 miles and in extreme circumstances as often as every 12,000 miles.  As a good rule every 20,000-30,000 miles. Indicators that will help determine if you need to change your fluid is the fluid coloration (a red color is normal) and if there is an odor or hot smell coming from the fluid.

How do I check the transmission fluid?

Caution and safety should always be practiced when checking the transmission fluid, because the vehicle must be running on most applications.   Before checking the transmission fluid we highly recommend you reference your owner’s manual.  The dipstick may have which indicator position and/or gear to check the transmission fluid in.  In addition, the transmission dipstick will usually have high and low marks, so fill as needed.  On most GM, Ford, and front wheel drive Chryslers check the fluid with the vehicle running and in park.  On most Chrysler rear wheel drive applications apply the emergency brake first and then check the fluid with the vehicle running and in neutral.

If the fluid level is low or there is none on the stick this normally is an indication of a potential leak and fluid is required.  Consumers also should note that some applications do not have a dipstick, it is considered a sealed unit. Please consult a professional if you have questions or problems.

What kind of fluid does my transmission use?

There are so many different types and variations of transmissions today and with the advancement of fluid continually changing we recommend you reference the owner’s manual for the correct fluid specifications.

Should I repair or replace my vehicle?

This is a legitimate question that customers encounter when determining if they should repair their vehicle.  There are a number of factors that play into this and every situation is different.  For beginners, age, mileage, and how the vehicle has been maintained can play a role.  Many consumers may have the vehicle paid for and simply like not having a car payment.  Others may have a loan on the vehicle, which is a contributing factor.  The most emotional question of all is do I really like this vehicle? This question is one that only you can answer.

New and used cars are expensive, some new cars can cost as much as a mortgage.  Buying a used car may lead right back to where you are now, repairing the vehicle.  However, we offer our customers a complimentary inspection for a used vehicle they may be purchasing.

When determining if you should purchase another vehicle, there are a few things to keep in mind.  First, banks all have tiers based on your credit score for basis of the interest rate you will receive.  These rates vary and quickly increase depending on which tier you fall in.  Secondly, the interest rate will vary depending upon the year of the vehicle.  Insurance on a brand new or newer vehicle generally means your insurance will increase. Consumers should note the costs associated with registering or plating a new vehicle.  Lastly, the sales tax increase can be a significant cost.  For example, a $10,000.00 vehicle would cost an additional $700.00 and a $20,000.00 vehicle would cost an additional $1,400.00.

The chart below shows some examples of loan amounts based on a generic calculator from a local bank.  Note: these numbers are a guide and a way to assist you with making your decision.  The numbers should not be considered true amounts, because every situation and variables will differ.

Interest Rate Amount Financed Loan Term Monthly Payment Interest Paid
6.75% $10,000 3 yrs $308 $1,075
6.75% $10,000 4 yrs $238 $1,439

6.75% $15,000 4 yrs $357 $2,158
6.75% $20,000 3 yrs $615 $2,149
6.75% $20,000 4 yrs $477 $2,877
6.75% $20,000 5 yrs $394 $3,620
6.75% $25,000 4 yrs $596 $3,597
6.75% $25,000 5 yrs $492 $4,525
6.75% $30,000 4 yrs $715 $4,316
6.75% $30,000 5 yrs $591 $5,430

Relative to a new or used car, repairing a vehicle may be the most cost efficient and best solution.  To put things into perspective, here are a few examples.  If the cost of repairing your vehicle is $2,000.00, your estimated cost is roughly $167.00 per month, based on a 12-month period in the form of a cash payment.  Let’s say you need $5,000.00 worth of repair work done to your vehicle to have it in good running condition.  In this example, your estimated cost is roughly $209.00 per month, based on a 24-month period in the form of a cash payment.

Here are some tips for you when it comes to repairing your vehicle.  No one likes to pay for costly vehicle repairs, especially when they are unexpected.  The best way to remedy this is to maintain your vehicle with a consistent preventative maintenance program.  Guaranteed Transmission Service has qualified technicians and the capability to assist you with a program for your car. Why is the cost of transmission repair so much?

There are many reasons and variables why a major transmission repair can be expensive that all play factors in determining the price of a transmission repair.  Obvious factors such as make, model, and year of vehicle play a role, while features such as motor size, front wheel drive, four-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive are also contributors.

Transmissions are comprised of thousands of individual components; some are free standing while others make up subassemblies, but all are interrelated with each component’s function working together as one.

During an overhaul, the transmission is totally removed from the vehicle in order to be completely disassembled.  All internal components are removed, thoroughly cleaned and inspected for quality and tolerance.  All worn or damaged parts are either repaired or replaced during this procedure.

The rebuilding procedure begins after the disassembly, cleaning, and inspection process has been completed.  First, the multiple subassemblies are built and set to specifications. Then, all the components and subassemblies are assembled into the transmission case.  Next, the transmission is reinstalled into the vehicle, and finally the vehicle is road tested and checked for accurate performance.

Today’s transmissions are continuously growing in complexity, along with the use of electronics and technology.  The transmission is now dependent on multiple components of the vehicle for information, processing, and proper functioning.  This means the ever changing and updating of equipment and training is necessary for today’s transmission repair.

Transmission repair is very involved and paraphrasing this process does not signify the realization or complexity of the entire procedure.

Why can’t you give me an actual price over the phone?

Decades ago there were only a handful of different types of transmissions on the road.

Generally transmission shops had a good stock of rebuilt units on hand with virtually zero updates necessary.  Parts were relatively inexpensive because most shops had an abundant supply of cores and used parts on hand to replace them.

Today, things have changed and tremendously progressed.  There are now more than ten times as many transmissions in use with new types, variations, and modifications every year.

Technological advances have made transmissions electronically controlled and co-dependent on other components of the vehicle.  That means your vehicle may be experiencing transmission problems, but the transmission may not be what is actually malfunctioning.  An accurate diagnosis and possibly a series of tests are necessary to perform before condemning the transmission.  Guaranteed Transmission Service has trained technicians and the appropriate equipment and resources to provide a thorough diagnosis for your vehicle.  We can determine whether the problem lies external or internal the transmission.

If the transmission is the problem, the degree of the damage is not certain until an internal inspection is performed.  Interior hard parts and the extent of their damage impact the cost of the repair.

Once the transmission and the version in your vehicle are identified, along with a comprehensive explanation and diagnosis of the vehicle’s condition, then a more accurate estimate can be made to repair it.

How can I make sure a shop has qualified technicians?

Technician certifications are one of the more noticeable items to look for.  The certificates indicate technicians have passed tests to prove their competence in one or more areas of automotive repair.

Among the most common in the automotive industry are certifications given by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Certifications that specialize in the transmission industry are from the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA).  Both have tests in the different field positions that are geared just for the transmission industry.

Certifications are not a guarantee of competency, but it does instill of level of pride and professionalism among technicians.

Guaranteed Transmission Service encourages and takes continuous learning and education seriously.  Our members attend seminars held all over the country to obtain the latest information and updates.  Along with seminars, Guaranteed Transmission Service knows that technicians can only be as good as the resources and equipment they have available to them.  Guaranteed Transmission Service has readily available online resources, data, hotlines, and numerous magazine subscriptions in all areas of the automotive industry, and the latest equipment to enhance the level of service to our customers.

How can I be sure I can trust this shop?

Here are some numerous ways to identify if a shop is trustworthy or not.  One way to help determine if a shop is trustworthy are by the affiliations they are apart of.  Many affiliations require prerequisites to become a member and have practices of trafficking complying and non-complying members. Affiliations such as the Better Business Bureau, the local chamber of commerce, related trade associations, and even AAA are good indicators of an honest shop.

Not only do affiliations serve as an excellent reference, but others such as longevity, reputation, and your general repair shops are prime sources as well.  One of the best resources are friends, family, co-workers, neighbors or anyone you trust that have had a transmission repair done.

Guaranteed Transmission Service is a member of numerous affiliations that are trade and non-trade related.  These affiliations are listed on the home page of this website, by clicking on the logo you can read more about the affiliation.  Along with that, Guaranteed Transmission Service has been family owned and operated, serving the local community for over 25 years now.  Service, honesty, quality, and integrity speak for themselves, meaning that the majority of our business comes from referrals.
